Preventing The Lost Decade Capturing the Longevity Dividend

Our goal is to recover the Lost Decade. The Lost Decade is the 10 or so years that many people spend suffering from poor health and/or disability, often due to a lack of preventative care and poor life choices.

Our stretch goal is to achieve the Longevity Dividend. The Longevity Dividend refers to not only the recovery of The Lost Decade, but an additional increase in one’s lifespan beyond this threshold. It may be possible that this Longevity Dividend will one day be decades of additional lifetime.

As we age, our risk of suffering from diseases like cancer, COVID-19, and diabetes goes up. For example, cardiovascular disease incidence in those above the age of 80 is over double that of those aged 40 to 59 in the United States. And it’s not just disease — the smaller things get worse too.

Nearly every body system deteriorates as we get older, leading to “things going wrong” — think worse eyesight, atrophied muscles, diminished memory, and more.

We all know that the average 80-year-old is weaker, slower, and in poorer health than the average teenager. The roots of the conditions we associate with aging often take hold at the microscopic level before they become visible as conditions like Alzheimer’s disease or stroke.

Over the last few decades, researchers have worked to understand the cellular groundwork underlying age-related health issues. There’s a lot to discover, but we also know more than we used to. Most importantly, we know that aging is, to a degree, under biological control and modifiable. Our team operates at the leading edge of geroscience and are excited to apply the most rigorous and replicable research to our praxis as it evolves.
